OpenAI just doubled the ChatGPT Pro limits — and cancelled a price-hike-by-stealth that was due to land today. One day before Pro 200 subscribers were set to lose half their included usage, the company reversed course, doubled allowances across every Pro tier, and left the $200 monthly price untouched.
The reversal came straight from Thibault Sottiaux, who leads Codex and ChatGPT Work at OpenAI. In a post on X on October 29, he wrote: “We are doubling all usage limits for all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today.” The post was reposted by OpenAI’s official account and passed 2.29 million views, per coverage of the announcement.
His second line mattered just as much: “We heard your kind feedback and won’t be reducing usage limits for Pro 200, so your Work and Codex usage will stay the same.”
What exactly changed on October 29
The doubling applies to the shared allowance covering ChatGPT Work and Codex, OpenAI’s coding tool. The two draw from one pool.
| Plan | Monthly price | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Pro 100 | $100 | Work and Codex limits doubled |
| Pro 200 | $200 | Planned cut cancelled; usage stays the same for existing subscribers |
| Pro 500 | $500 | Work and Codex limits doubled; Ultrafast access included |
| Business Premium | Per seat | Limits doubled |
Three details complete the picture:
- Dots keep their own lane. OpenAI’s always-on assistants, called Dots, keep extended limits, and Dot usage stays separate from your default usage.
- Nothing to apply for. The change is effective immediately and applies automatically.
- No exact numbers. OpenAI publishes no token or message count per Pro tier, so the doubling is relative, not a number to plan a workload around to the token.

The cut that never happened
Rewind to September 29, when OpenAI emailed existing Pro 200 subscribers about a change scheduled for October 30, 2026.
Under that plan, Work and Codex usage would have fallen from 20 times the Plus allowance to 10 times. The weekly GPT-6 Pro limit in Chat would have dropped from 200 messages to 100. The price: still $200 a month.
In other words, the same $200 would have bought half the work. OpenAI softened the email with a one-time grant of 62,500 usage credits, valued at $2,500, expiring December 31, 2026. Credits are drawn only after a plan’s included usage runs out.
The backlash built through October, and on October 29 — one day before the deadline — OpenAI blinked.
What doubles — and what does not
Read the headline with care — the doubling does not mean the same thing on every tier:
| Area | Status after October 29 |
|---|---|
| Work + Codex allowance (Pro 100, Pro 500, Business Premium) | Doubled |
| Work + Codex allowance (grandfathered Pro 200) | Unchanged — cut cancelled, not doubled on top of the old allowance |
| Dots extended limits | Continued, counted separately |
| GPT-6 Pro weekly message cap in Chat | Unchanged, per reporting on the announcement |
| ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) | Unchanged, including its five-hour usage cap |
The practical takeaway: Pro 200 subscribers keep what they had. Pro 100 and Pro 500 subscribers get twice the Work and Codex room they had yesterday. If you only use ChatGPT’s chat window, this changes little — worth knowing before you upgrade.
How the Pro limits saga unfolded
- September 29: OpenAI emails Pro 200 subscribers — a cut to 10x Plus is coming October 30, plus 62,500 bonus credits.
- October 28: Warnings about the cut spread online as the deadline nears.
- October 29: Sottiaux announces the reversal — limits doubled, Pro 200 cut cancelled, effective today.
- October 30: No cut takes effect. Pro 200 subscribers keep their existing allowance.

How to profit from the doubled limits
For freelancers and small agencies, a doubled allowance is billable capacity — if you use it deliberately:
- Sell bigger coding packages. Twice the allowance supports larger fixed-price builds without buying API credits mid-project.
- Batch agentic work. Queue Codex refactors and Work research tasks in the same week instead of rationing them across resets.
- Put Dots on client work. Dots keep separate extended limits, so an always-on assistant can handle follow-ups without eating your main allowance.
- Hold off on upgrading. If you were about to jump from Pro 100 to Pro 200 to escape a limit, the doubling may have solved it for free — check Settings, then Usage first.
- Price the credit grant. Grandfathered Pro 200 subscribers hold a $2,500-value top-up expiring December 31, 2026 — schedule heavy work before it lapses.
Frequently asked questions
Was the Pro 200 cut cancelled?
Yes. OpenAI confirmed it will not reduce Pro 200 limits, so existing subscribers keep their current Work and Codex usage at $200 a month.
Does the doubling apply to ChatGPT Plus?
No. Plus is not part of this announcement, and its limits — including its five-hour cap — are unchanged.
What about the GPT-6 Pro weekly message cap?
Reporting on the announcement says it stays the same. The doubling covers Work and Codex allowances.
Do Dots use my main allowance?
No. OpenAI says Dot usage stays separate from your default usage, and extended Dot limits continue for now.
Do I need to do anything to get the new limits?
No — it applies automatically. Check Settings, then Usage to confirm.
What happens to the 62,500 bonus credits?
They were offered in OpenAI’s September email to existing Pro 200 subscribers, valued at $2,500, expiring December 31, 2026. Plan usage is spent before credits are drawn.
