Copilot finance skills just went from a promising demo to a bookkeeper’s toolkit. On October 29, 2026, Microsoft announced more than 25 new finance skills and partner-built plugins across Microsoft Copilot, purpose-built for accounting, capital markets and finance work.
The timing is the story for small firms. Month-end close is repetitive, deadline-driven work that clients hate paying hourly for and accountants hate doing by hand. Copilot is now aimed directly at that work — reconciliations, journal entries, variance analysis and close packages — inside Excel and Cowork.
What Microsoft actually shipped
The expansion builds on finance skills Microsoft introduced in Copilot in Excel in June 2026. The new accounting capabilities compare balances and transactions, identify discrepancies, draft journal entries and analyze performance against plans.
Beyond accounting, the update covers:
- Financial planning and analysis. Budget forecasts from actual results and departmental inputs, financial statements and reporting packages from source balances, and variance explanations by price, volume, mix, rate or timing.
- Close management. Organizing and tracking month-end, quarter-end and year-end close activities, including checklists, owners, due dates and approvals.
- Audit and compliance. Audit evidence packages, quarterly workbacks, expense itemization and dataset analysis, plus an optional audit trail in Excel whenever an accounting capability is invoked.
- Cowork delegation. A Finance plugin for Cowork that assembles close-review or forecast-review materials — spreadsheets, presentations and follow-up communications — from one multi-step task.
- Office in Copilot. Excel embedded directly in the Copilot app, so workbooks can be analyzed, edited and co-authored without leaving Chat or Cowork.
Microsoft also says Work IQ grounds Copilot in organizational knowledge such as the close calendar, so it works from more than the file in front of it.
The partner plugins that matter for small firms
Finance data rarely lives in one system. Partner plugins connect Copilot to the tools small businesses actually use: QuickBooks, Xero and Zoho Books, plus FactSet, Morningstar, LSEG and S&P Global for market data.
Inside Microsoft’s stack, the Dynamics 365 ERP plugin brings finance and operations data into Copilot, and Fabric IQ makes governed Microsoft Fabric data — starting with Power BI reports and semantic models — usable in analysis.
Availability is split, so read the fine print before selling a service around it. Accounting capabilities in Excel and Cowork are in Frontier, finance skills in Excel are generally available, and the Capital Markets and Finance plugins in Cowork are generally available. The Dynamics 365 ERP plugin is beginning to roll out.

Variance analysis means explaining why actual results differ from a budget or forecast. FP&A stands for financial planning and analysis.
Sell a faster month-end close in four steps
1. Connect the real books — QuickBooks, Xero or Zoho Books through the partner plugin.
2. Run the reconciliation first — Compare balances, flag discrepancies, draft the journal entries.
3. Build the close package in Cowork — Delegate the spreadsheets, deck and follow-ups as one task.
4. Review with the audit trail on — Check every AI-generated change before it reaches the client.
How to profit from it
Bookkeeping is a trust business, and speed without accuracy destroys trust. Sell the outcome — a close delivered early, with a clean audit trail — not the tool.
- Offer a “close in 3 days” package. Use Copilot’s reconciliation and close-checklist skills to compress a week of work, and price on the deadline, not the hours.
- Sell variance explanations as a service. Small businesses get reports they do not understand. A one-page “what changed and why” memo, built from Copilot’s variance analysis, is an easy monthly add-on.
- Turn the audit trail into your selling point. Show clients that every AI-assisted change can be traced in Excel. That transparency wins work from firms nervous about AI bookkeeping.
- Start with one plugin, not five. Master the client’s actual system — QuickBooks, Xero or Zoho — before adding market-data plugins they will never use.
- Never send an unchecked journal entry. Copilot drafts; you approve. One wrong entry posted to a live ledger costs more than any time saved.
