Seven million people have installed the ChatGPT Chrome extension — and since October 15, 2026, it can see your open tabs. In Chat mode it reads across them to answer questions; in ChatGPT Work it can act inside them: sending messages, filling out forms, downloading files, and tidying your tab pile. OpenAI announced it as “bringing the power of computer use to anyone who uses Chrome,” and the company’s browser-extension documentation now spells out exactly what it can touch — and what it asks before touching.

What actually changed on October 15
Three upgrades landed at once. First, tabs as context: tag Chrome in the ChatGPT web or desktop app and Chat pulls information from your open tabs. OpenAI’s demo compared three sofa listings across three tabs by price, material, and delivery terms — no copy-paste.
Second, tab control in Work. ChatGPT Work — OpenAI’s agent mode for longer tasks — can now act inside your Chrome tabs: filling out forms, sending messages, downloading files, and organizing or grouping tabs. The Verge compared it to Google’s Gemini-powered auto browse.
Third, the sidebar got the full ChatGPT: the panel beside your page now carries your complete conversation history in Chat or Work, so you can work without leaving the site you’re on.
Chat vs. Work: two very different powers
The names sound similar, but they do opposite jobs. Chat gathers; Work acts. Mixing them up means either underusing the feature or handing an agent more power than you intended.
OpenAI’s sample prompts show the split: use Chat to compare three couches by dimensions, material, delivery time, and return policy — and use Work to take an event brief, fill out the registration form, and stop before submitting. The agent prepares; you pull the trigger.

Which browsers work — and the one catch
The extension now reaches beyond Chrome. All five supported browsers handle tab mentions and browser control from the ChatGPT desktop app. Side chat — the persistent panel beside your page — works in four of them.

The safety rules (read before you automate)
An agent that can act on signed-in sites — LinkedIn, Salesforce, Gmail, internal tools, per OpenAI’s docs — deserves a careful setup. The defaults are sensible:
- Permission per site: ChatGPT asks before each new website. Your options: Allow once, Allow for this site, Allow for all sites, or Decline.
- Elevated Risk labels: “Allow for all sites” and browser-history access are flagged elevated risk. History access is scoped to the individual request — no always-allow option.
- Files always ask: ChatGPT always asks before downloading or uploading files and when referencing browser history.
- Allowlist and blocklist: manage domains in Settings > Computer Use > Manage; the supported browsers share these permissions.
- Treat page content as untrusted: OpenAI’s docs say exactly that, and warn against sending secrets through browser tasks unless required and reviewed.
Use Allow once for client sites and keep the allowlist short. Ten minutes of permission hygiene beats explaining why an agent acted on a client’s CRM.
How to profit: 4 freelancer plays
This update removes the copy-paste tax from tab-heavy freelance work. Four concrete plays:
1. Sell faster client research
Open twelve competitor tabs, ask Chat to build a comparison sheet with pricing, features, and source links. A two-hour research task becomes 20 minutes of review and polish. Charge the same project fee and pocket the margin — or win on turnaround.
2. Automate lead-gen grunt work
Work can read signed-in sites like LinkedIn and Salesforce, draft outreach, and fill contact forms across tabs. Build a weekly pipeline: open target-company tabs, extract decision-maker details into a sheet, draft personalized first lines. More qualified leads per hour, fuller book of business.
3. Offer “browser automation setup” as a service
Small businesses drown in repetitive web forms — timesheets, inventory, CMS entries, expense filing. The store listing names data entry into record systems and bulk expense filing as capabilities. Sell a fixed-fee setup: configure the extension, build prompt templates, set allowlists, train the team. Recurring check-ins become retainer revenue.
4. Speed up content and proposals
Comparing vendors across tabs and drafting the outreach email, or summarizing a dozen sources for a client report — proposal-stage tasks that eat unpaid hours. Halve proposal prep time and bid on twice as many jobs with the same effort.
FAQ
Is the upgraded extension free?
OpenAI says the updated extension is available for all ChatGPT plans and downloads free from the Chrome Web Store. Availability can still depend on rollout and workspace settings.
Which browsers are supported?
Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi — all with tab mentions and browser control from the ChatGPT desktop app. Side chat works everywhere except Opera, where you start tasks in the desktop app.
Can ChatGPT see sites where I’m logged in?
Yes. The docs state ChatGPT can read or act on signed-in sites, naming LinkedIn, Salesforce, Gmail, and internal tools. It asks permission per new website, and page content should be treated as untrusted.
What’s the difference between Chat and Work with tabs?
Chat gathers information across open tabs — comparing, summarizing, extracting. Work takes actions in tabs: sending messages, filling forms, downloading files, and organizing tab groups.
Did OpenAI discontinue its own browser?
OpenAI deprecated its Atlas browser on July 9, 2026, with shutdown scheduled for August 9, 2026, pointing users to the extension and sidebar. This update is the payoff: meet users inside the browser they already use.
How do I stop it from acting on certain sites?
Go to Settings > Computer Use > Manage to keep an allowlist and blocklist of domains. Removing a domain from the allowlist makes ChatGPT ask again. Browser-history access always asks — there’s no permanent allow.
