Anatomy of an Automation That Sells

Lesson 1.4 of Module 1 · 10 min · Free

What you’ll learn

Learn to dissect any sellable automation into its anatomy — trigger, data, logic, actions, safety net — and judge whether an automation is a product or a toy.

After this lesson you can: open any workflow and label its 5 parts, spot the two things demos always skip (error handling and the human handoff), and score an automation idea with the Sellability Checklist before building it.

Step-by-step

1. Organ 1 — Trigger
The event that starts everything: a form submitted, a call missed, a message received.

2. Organ 2 — Data
What the event carries: name, phone, need, source. An alert that says “new lead” with no phone number is decoration.

3. Organ 3 — Logic
The decisions: business hours or after hours? New or returning? Which service, routed to whom? Plain if-this-then-that, chosen with the client’s reality.

4. Organ 4 — Actions
The visible work: instant reply, sheet/CRM row, owner alert. The easiest organ to build — and the least likely to justify a retainer by itself.

5. Organ 5 — Safety net
If anything fails, a human gets told — fast. Test question: “If this stopped working tonight, who finds out, and when?”

6. Product vs toy
Toys break silently and produce no checkable number. Products run unattended, fail loudly to a human, and report a number the client can see.

7. Score before you build
Sellability Checklist: clear trigger · painful manual step removed · visible result · failure path to a human · runs on free/cheap tiers. Missing 2 or more = a demo, not an offer.
